Have you ever had a Buche de Noël? Oh, my goodness, there is heaven ahead of you! It is a rolled chocolate sheet cake with hazlenut cream filling covered with meringue snow. It is a French (but of course) food version of the Yule Log. You often even put candles on it to celebrate its tie to the long burning log. The other thing that’s true about it is that it can be cut into day after day and not lose that fabulous taste. There are other things available that will help the holiday spirit keep going:

If you’ve decided to celebrate your wedding during the holidays, you might as well use the traditional foods to tie your marriage and the holidays together in your minds and in the minds of your community.

Italians: There’s every thing from bacalà to panettone (designed by a baker Antonio to win the heart of a princess, that seem appropriate for your wedding!), which say Christmas in Italian families and could soon say it in yours.

Swedes: Yum. Smörgåsbord is Christmas in Sweden. There are fishes and cheeses and a wonderful ham. Finished off with pepparkakar, those fabulous spice cookies. (Did you know that if you put a pepparkaka in your hand, and push down on it, if it breaks into 3 pieces you will get your wish? Didn’t work? Get a stack! There’s a wish in there for you!)

The English: Goose and Figgy Pudding. Look up the Victorian parlor game snapdragon which involves sticking your hand into burning brandy to pull out raisins?

Mexican: they also do that cod thing, great, put will sometimes do a red and green dinner with sauces to delight your senses. When it’s cold outside, spicy foods are great. Even if it’s not your culture, it’s fun to have a chance to not eat turkey, especially if you’re doing a more Anglicized holiday feast at the wedding itself.

And don’t forget mulled wine and egg nog. Sure, with all that cream, it could give you a heart attack if you drink a punchbowl full, but no one’s going to let you do that, because they’ll want their share!

What are your favorite foods? Serve them at the rehearsal dinner. Have a combo, yours, mine and ours, so people know where each of you came from and where you might be going! These are foods that can make it into your holiday repertoire and be looked forward to throughout your marriage (by you and your community!)
